Wikipedia mobile interaction

Introduction

Open source is a complex phenomenon that can be understood from several different perspectives. Perhaps the most fundamental definition of open source for us is this: open source software is distributed under a type of license that promotes sharing by preserving public availability of a source code and preventing restrictions on the software's use and distribution.

Vodafone Group R&D is a global organization with an in-depth knowledge of mobile platforms, internet technologies, wireless communications and with a lot of experience in research and development areas. Beside technological goals, we are working on projects aiming to learn about Vodafone’s collaboration opportunities, risks and benefits, and how to contribute to the free software community following the principle of promoting sharing by preserving public availability.

We have reached the conclusion that the common participation between these two worlds will permit mobile platforms to develop and evolve in a smooth manner. The collaboration between the open source community and Vodafone Group R&D will very valuable for both.

Project Definition

Vodafone Group R&D wants to provide the end customer with access to free content. With that goal, Vodafone intends to deliver a mobile application to access and interact with Wikipedia.

At the same time, Vodafone Group R&D has initiated a collaboration with Wikimedia Foundation in order to participate in the evolution of the APIs and tools to access Wikipedia.

Objectives

From a social point of view, Vodafone Group R&D wants to contribute to the creation of open tools to access contents published under a free content license and in particular those which are stored in the Wikimedia's systems.

Vodafone Group R&D wants to develop a service to allow mobile users to access and edit the contents of Wikipedia. The project will contribute to the rapid and appropriate development of the service in the context of an open source community.

Vodafone Group R&D has the objective of collaborating with the Wikimedia Foundation in the improvement of the MediaWiki APIs, based on PHP technology, which allow third party applications to interact with Wikipedia.

Activities

Next, there is an enumeration of the different activities that must be carried out throughout the project:

1. Exploratory Report about the alternatives to implement a mobile Wikipedia Service. 2. Draw conclusions and establish an agreement on technical implementation. 3. Software client development under an open source project. 4. Participation in the MediaWiki open source project.

Project management.

The project will be managed in the Vodafone Betavine Forge. The Vodafone Betavine forge is a research and development space run by Vodafone Group R&D, where we aim to encourage the Open Source Community to collaborate in the area of Internet and Wireless communications.

Please have a look at it, and participate.

  • (open source and free software will be used in this forum as a common term, even though we recognize the differences between them. In order to ease the comprehension, and to avoid discussions we will use them interchangeably.)
